Spinal Manipulative Therapy - Considered the corner stone of the chiropractic treatment is the spinal adjustment. This involves a controlled, high velocity, low amplitude manipulation to the joints in the spine. In a controlled manner, the chiropractor will position the the body to isolate the injured segment. The chiropractor will then apply a quick (high velocity), short (low amplitude) thrust with the goal of restoring proper range of motion in the joint.
When the adjustment is performed there is an audible popping sound associated. This is the release of gas which is caused by the release of oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide when the joint is moved passed its passive range of motion. This release decreases joint pressure and a relieving sensation is felt.
